If workers perform musculoskeletal burden work, a hazardous factor investigation must be conducted every three years, and newly established workplaces must conduct an initial investigation within one year from the date of establishment.
However, if a musculoskeletal disorder occurs or is recognized as an occupational disease, if new musculoskeletal burden work or equipment is introduced, or if the work environment, such as workload or work processes, changes, an unscheduled investigation must be conducted within one month.
Q4. Are office workers also subject to the musculoskeletal risk factor survey?
Being an office worker does not automatically make you subject to or exempt from a musculoskeletal risk factor investigation. You must verify whether your actual work meets the criteria for musculoskeletal burden work as stipulated in the Ministry of Employment and Labor's notification.
For example, work involving intensive operation of a keyboard or mouse for data entry for more than four hours a day may be included as burdensome work under the notification. However, rather than automatically classifying all general computer use as subject to statutory investigation, work time, posture, repetitiveness, and the actual method of performance must be verified together.
Q5. What should be done if an employee complains of pain as a result of the investigation?
If signs such as pain, numbness, reduced range of motion, or functional decline appear, do not view them solely as personal issues; instead, consult with a health manager and consider necessary medical measures. At the same time, you must assess the need for improvements to the working environment, including working hours, workload, posture, equipment and tools, handling of heavy objects, and rest standards.
It is recommended to manage individual symptom and health information so that only necessary personnel have access, and to avoid sharing it with managers or colleagues beyond the scope required for work coordination and health protection measures. EAP can be recommended as an option for supporting pain and the anxiety and stress experienced during the return-to-work process.
